Japan’s Fast Retailing Thursday slashed its annual earnings forecast as its star brand Uniqlo saw domestic sales flatten on weather issues and, surprisingly, marketing missteps.Fast Retailing said that net profit fell to ¥11.8bn ($134m) in the March-May quarter, down 16.3% year-on-year. Overall sales rose 4.7% to ¥188bn on operating profit down 13.6% to ¥23.6bn.While the company’s international Uniqlo business more than doubled as it opened new stores in Asia and its first store in Russia, domestic sales rose less than 1%, the company said, blaming bad weather and marketing missteps. The company last week said that domestic same-store Uniqlo sales had fallen 5.8% in June from the previous year.”We weren’t able to communicate about our products to our customers directly,” said chief financial officer Hidetsugu Onishi, adding that too many products made it difficult for clients to find what they were looking for.”Customers want to be told which products are the most popular. If there are too many choices, psychology makes it that human beings can’t decide.”Fast Retailing cut its full-year net profit forecast ending in August to ¥67.5bn from a previous prediction of ¥71bn. It expects revenue of ¥815bn on operating profit of ¥133bn.The company, which also owns French brands Comptoir des Cotonniers, Princesse tam.tam and the Theory label, also downgraded its earnings forecast for its overseas business due to the euro’s weakness. For the nine months to May, Fast Retailing’s net profit rose 35.2% to ¥67.2bn on operating profit up 27.1% at ¥123.5bn. Revenue rose 22.7% to ¥659bn.
